Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, this multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using calaveras, aztec marigolds, and the favourite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. A common symbol of the holiday is the skull (in Spanish calavera), which celebrants represent in masks, called calacas (colloquial term for skeleton), and foods such as sugar or chocolate skulls.
