Did you know that we don’t just teach Spanish and English language here at Language Tuition Nottingham? We are also involved in a number of teacher training projects! Some are based here in the UK – for example now you can gain an English language teaching certificate (the Trinity College accredited ‘CertTESOL’) with us right here in Nottingham! But we also are involved in some other international teaching development projects. Earlier this year our director of studies, Marius, spent two months in North East Vietnam working alongside the British Council and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education on a pilot project to help improve English language teaching in rural primary schools.

The project was an intensive 8 week training course for 24 primary school teachers from Lang Son and the surrounding villages.  In the mornings the teachers had English lessons to help prepare for an English language exam. In the afternoons teachers had teaching methodology lessons to help them encourage their students to become more active learners of English!

The pilot project was deemed a great success, and the British council and Ministry of Education are now rolling out similar courses throughout the area. 23 of the 24 teachers passed their English exam, but perhaps much more importantly they all reported that they felt much more confident using English as the medium of instruction in their own lessons. The methodology classes gave them lots of practical ideas for activities that they could use in their lessons to make things more active, interesting, and motivating for their learners. Our favourite piece of feedback was from one teacher who let us know that the course had enabled her to completely change how she teaches English to young learners, and now her students tell her that they can’t wait for her lessons! So, well done everyone and thanks for all of you hard work and commitment during the course!

We continue to be involved with teacher development projects around the world. Marius is currently on another adventure in East Kazakhstan, working with groups of local primary teachers to prepare for the Cambridge TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) exam. We look forward to hearing about it when he gets back next month!
